Posted Nov 21, 2017

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA (September 28, 2017) – “A Promise to HELP” (APTH), a non-profit healthcare volunteer organization, sponsored by Spirit of Luke Charitable Foundation, is pleased to announce the donation of a state-of-the-art Retinal Eye Scanner by HealPros, an Atlanta based company, created to assist and work with health plans to improve member health by closing care gaps in diabetes.

Both HealPros and “A Promise to HELP” have a common foundation of providing health care services to people in rural areas with limited access to medical services. The HealPros Retinal Eye Scanner donation brings a much needed service to the poor and underserved people in the 18 counties that make up the Alabama Black Belt Region that includes Selma, Montgomery and the now famous “Gees Bend”.

“A Promise to HELP” is especially grateful because 2017 marks 15 years of providing free medical and counseling services to the people in the Black Belt of Alabama where diabetes is very prevalent in the region, and has had a very debilitating impact on the lives of the individuals with it. Over the 15 years of service, “A Promise to HELP” has had nearly 7,500 volunteers to deliver medical examinations and treatment to more than 6,800 patients, provided approximately 22,500 hot meals, distributed over 17,500 bags of clothes and 3,750 book bags, while offering spiritual counseling and conversion to nearly 3,100 men, women and children.

Founders’ of “A Promise to HELP”, Dr. Sandra Ford, MD, board certified internist, and Executive Director Henry Ford, said, “We are excited about the Retinal Eye Scanner donation from HealPros. After 15 years of providing medical services to generations of families with diabetes in the rural Black Belt of Alabama, we are pleased to find another healthcare organization recognizing the disparity and bring services to these kinds of rural communities.”

Michael Yom, Chief Product Officer at HealPros, said, “HealPros is proud to help APTH, an organization so deeply committed to serving communities in need. As part of our solution, HealPros contracts with health plans across the country to bring in-home and event-based diabetic eye exams to their members. We are excited to know that many patients will be helped by APTH’s ability to screen for eye disease and helping to prevent blindness.”
